10 Best Gas Air Compressors Reviews 2022 | Easy To Start

Although electric compressors have been the most popular choice for most people, more and more DIY enthusiasts are shifting towards gas-powered air compressors.

This is because the gas-powered compressors provide better power and PSI along with high portability.

Making the choice of switching to an electric compressor is easy.

But buying the best gas air compressor is a hefty task that requires extensive research.

Lucky for you, I’ve already done the fact-finding, and I’m more than happy to pass the torch on!

Read on if you want to know my ten best gas air compressor picks in the market.

Buyer’s Guide

Before buying a product, it’s a good idea to have some knowledge about what you should look for in the product’s specifications.

There are a few things that you will have to consider if you’re going to buy an electric compressor.

You might notice that some of these factors are the same as the pneumatic or electric compressors, but they are just as important for the gas air compressors too.

So, don’t just hover over the headings.

Read through each point carefully, and I guarantee that you’ll thank yourself in the long run!

Tank Capacity

The tank size of your compressor is a major factor in determining how many tasks you can accomplish each day.

If you require the compressor for simple DIY day-to-day tasks, then the smaller 4-gallon tanks will be your best option.

Similarly, for an industrial or a commercial user, there are gas air compressors available with a capacity of as much as 20 gallons!

Compressor Engine

Gas air compressors come in different engine sizes. The larger engines are more prone to heating up because of the heavy-duty tasks that they execute every day.

For that reason, they require oiling and lubrication from time to time.

However, smaller engines simply consist of a Teflon band that can be replaced when required.

You’ll have to buy an engine with just the right dimensions. So, make sure you don’t end up buying a smaller or a larger engine compared to your needs!

The horsepower of your compressor will tell you how much gas will be converted into the mechanical energy or the work output.

This means that higher horsepower has a chance of delivering more efficient performance.

But I don’t recommend worrying about it too much. This factor is not as important as airflow or pressure.

This is because you can also find air compressors with low HP, performing better as compared to high HP compressors.

Like the pneumatic and electric air compressors, psi and cfm values are just as important in gas air compressors as well.

Your PSI value will tell you the maximum pressure output, and the CFM value will tell you the rate of airflow in terms of cubic feet per meter.

Like I said above, you should prioritize high values of psi and cfm over high values of HP. Trust me; you won’t regret it!

Top 10 Gas Air Compressors Reviews

Are you ready to move on to the crux of the matter?

Don’t jump ahead to this portion if you haven’t read the buyer’s guide above. The terminologies might confuse you.

I’ll be going over each product’s features, followed by a list of pros and cons. I’ll also mention my personal favorite, so keep reading!

Let’s get started!

1. Industrial CTA5090412 Gas Air Compressor

The first item on my list is none other than the industrial air’s gas compressor. This compressor is best suited for use with pneumatic nail guns and airbrushing.

I respect the fact that in this compressor, the 4-gallon gas is not contained in a single chamber. It’s divided into two 2-gallon tanks, so a single point of leakage won’t stop you in your tracks.

You can keep working and repair the damaged tank when you have the time.

The Honda gas engine on this compressor will give you a CFM of up to 6.9 and a PSI value of up to 155. This range covers a wide variety of achievable tasks.

However, this isn’t the best option for industrial users as this compressor has a relatively short lifespan.

  • Best for pneumatic nailing
  • 2-gallon tank division
  • Honda gas engine with decent HP

  • Short lifespan for industrial use

2. MAKITA MAC5501G Gas Air Compressor

MAKITA MAC5501G is one of the more decent items on my list. Although it isn’t my first recommendation to anyone, it still gets the job done.

The tank capacity is a massive 10-gallon, so you can stop worrying about refilling the tank every few days.

The main highlight of this compressor is the ergonomic grip on the rope. It makes the device very easy to handle and start.

However, I’m not a fan of the PSI and CFM output. I think they could’ve been better compared to the 5.5 HP value.

  • High 10-gallon capacity
  • Easy to start
  • Powers multiple devices at once

  • Low CFM and PSI values

3. DEWALT DXCMTA5090412 Gas Air Compressor

You’re probably no stranger to the DEWALT’s brand name if you’ve ever bought something for your garage.

In this release, the main feature of the compressor is the dual ball-bearing engine.

This double bearing allows the compressor to operate for hours on end without heating up.

Gas compressors run without oil, so they’re more prone to heating up but not this one!

You can get up to 6.9 CFM at 40 psi with this compressor. This isn’t the best output out there, but it’s still better than most.

However, I don’t like that this unit is advertised as having a Subaru engine. It’s not Subaru but a Briggs & Stratton engine, and it’s really hard to start.

  • Dual ball bearing engine
  • Decent CFM and PSI output
  • Contains measurement gauges

  • Hard to start

4. NORTHSTAR Gas Air Compressor

It would be a good idea to get your hands on this compressor as soon as you can because it goes out of stock very quickly.

This is because this compressor is the dream product of any DIY user.

You might be surprised by how easy it is to use and operate this compressor.

It’s not mentioned in the product’s specification, but the easy-to-start feature of this device makes it stand out from the crowd.

The only downside to this compressor is that the outlet fittings for the hose are a little weak.

I expected to get a stronger NPT fitting from a 20-gallon tank such as this, but unfortunately, that’s not the case.

  • Easy to use
  • Engine stops when oil is low
  • Does not overheat

  • Weak outlet fittings

5. INGERSOL-RAND SS3J5.5GH-WB Gas Air Compressor

INGERSOLL RAND has been working tirelessly to provide customers with the top of the line products since the 1950s. This is another one of their great products.

If you decide to get this compressor, you’ll have the option of including a Honda engine instead of the default engine.

This option will open a whole new range of possibilities for your daily tasks.

Also, I really dig the portable design of this unit. You can carry it around the required job site wherever you need it!

Nonetheless, I’m not satisfied with the customer service that Ingersoll rand entails. It’s a good product, but better customer service could’ve been a cherry on top.

  • Optional Honda engine
  • Easy to move around
  • Lubricant increases lifetime

  • Unsatisfactory customer service

6. METABO EC2610E Gas Air Compressor

The METABO air compressor comes as a complete package.

Don’t you love it when you don’t have to purchase spare parts in addition to a product to get it running?

Well, you don’t have to worry about that with this rendition. All the breathers and pipe plugs are included with the compressor.

The CFM and PSI values are also quite decent at 9.5 per 90 psi.

However, the oil container is not as sturdy as one would hope. Be careful while oiling it because there’s a chance that it might leak.

  • Plugs and breathers included
  • Good CFM and PSI output
  • Wheelbarrow portability

  • Weak oil container

7. INGERSOLL-RAND 2475F13GH Single-Stage Compressor

This compressor is almost the same as the previous INGERSOLL-RAND compressor that I have reviewed above (Np.5).

The only difference here is that this one comes with a massive tank capacity of 30 gallons!

Since you can fill this compressor with almost a ton of gas, this means that it is a good choice for industrial and commercial users.

It’s also coated with weather-resistant paint so you can work in the rain or in the snow, without the weather taking a toll on your compressor’s outlook.

  • Massive 30-gallon capacity
  • Good for industrial use
  • Weather friendly exterior

  • Just a single tank for gas
  • Difficult to move

8. ROLAIR GD4000PV5H Gas Air Compressor

Out of all the gas-powered air compressors on my list, this one earns the top spot.

I would recommend that you get this unit even if you think that the 4.5 gallons won’t be able to meet your needs.

You can always get a refill and trade-off convenience with efficiency. It’s also as easy to move around as a normal nail gun.

This means that you can carry both your equipment and the compressor at the same time!

The CFM and PSI values are also really good compared to the compact design of the compressor.

  • Easy to move around
  • Compact design
  • Good CFM and PSI output

  • Subpar paint quality

9. HPDAVV Gas Air Compressor

One of the most underrated gas-powered air compressors is the HPDAVV’s single-stage compressor.

This compressor has a twin slot for the gas so you can work with multiple devices at the same time.

I was really impressed by the unique design of this compressor.

The two pistons for gas are attached on the opposite sides of the wheel that moves the unit. This puts an extra touch of space-saving on the compressor’s design.

However, you should know that the engine from this compressor exhausts carbon monoxide, so it’s only best if you use it outside instead of inside!

  • The twin slot allows multiple device connections.
  • Efficient design
  • Long-lasting durability

  • Not recommended for inside use

10. HPDMC Gas Air Compressor

The HPDMC is yet another trustworthy brand that delivers excellent air-powered systems. It’s the same case with this air compressor as well.

You’ll get an amazing CFM value of 24 and a high PSI value of 180 with this compressor. There’s no other compressor on my list that gives such a high output value.

You might be wondering why this isn’t my top recommendation?

That’s because although the unit is massive 30-gallon merchandise, it still lacks the wheelbarrow feature, which makes it difficult to move around.

  • Durable and sturdy design
  • Highest PSI and CFM output
  • Slick jet black exterior

  • Limited mobility

Frequently Asked Questions

What is better, gas or electric air compressor?

For working in places where there is limited or no electricity, gas air compressors are the best option for you.

However, electric air compressors are quieter than gas air compressors.

How does a gas air compressor work?

A gas air compressor works mechanically to reduce the volume of your gas, which in turn increases the pressure of the gas in the chamber.

This increased pressure gives the required pneumatic force to your equipment.

What is the main purpose of a gas air compressor?

Gas air compressors work just like electric or pneumatic compressors with a little extra noise.

Mainly, they are a good choice for people who need maximum portability during their tasks.

How many types of gas compressors are there?

There are two main types of gas compressors. Axial and Centrifugal.

Axial gas compressors provide a high flow rate and low pressure, whereas centrifugal compressors give high pressure and low flow rate.

How do I convert my electric compressor to gas?

Remove the electric motor from your electric compressor after locating where it’s mounted.

Then install the gas engine in its place.

Make sure you shut off the engine and ground the ignition cable beforehand.

Can gas air compressor tanks explode?

Sometimes, the gas air compressors explode, but this is no cause for concern if you manage your compressor properly.

Avoid it from being wet so that the exterior and the inlet valves don’t get damaged by rust.

Do I need to oil my gas air compressor tank?

Yes. Some gas compressors do require oiling from time to time.

Especially the bigger 30-gallon ones will need oiling after every 300 hours.

You can get almost a year without oiling the small 4-gallon ones.

Which is the easiest to move gas air compressor?

When looking for portability, you should mainly look for a small compressor that has a wheelbarrow on it.

The best portable air compressor on our list is the ROLAIR compressor (No. 8)

Choosing the right air compressor requires tremendous thought and research since it’s such an enormous investment.
